Do you have Runner’s Face?

RUNNER’S FACE  And no, this is not referring to the “game face” an athlete makes. Runner’s face generally occurs in both men and women ages 40 + who exercise to improve their body, and in doing so, end up with a skeletal and bony face. When exercising, athletes burns off fat beneath the layers of their skin. The marked loss of fatty tissue results in a loss of volume, which leads to a prominent appearance of the bones, accelerated development of skin laxity and deepening of wrinkles. Though you may look like a 20-year-old from the neck down, your face will easily give away your age. If the skin has taken a beating from pounding the pavement, there are ways to chase those wrinkles away. Runners often have wrinkles for reasons other than running itself. Many runners spend long hours outdoors without proper sun protection, so the wrinkles are a result of sun exposure.

I recommend a good sun protector and basic skin care regimen to reverse the affects of sun damage.  Use Revitalizing Formula during the day to give skin a boost with antioxidants, and use Reparative Night Serum to help repair damage overnight.  Non-surgical in-office procedures like Botox and injectable fillers such as Juvederm and Radiesse, help smooth wrinkles and restore fullness to the face giving the “Runner’s face” the same vitality the rest of their body has. Botox treatments can target lines in the brows or around the mouth, with results  lasting about four months. Injectable fillers restore volume, and can now last up to a year and sometimes longer.

Strides in Melanoma Research!

Great strides have been taken in Melanoma research. Yesterday the Food and Drug Administration approved the first drug of its kind to treat Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The pill called Zelboraf targets a specific gene mutation that is found in half of melanoma patients. Also approved, a new test to screen patients for the specific gene mutation.

To minimize your exposure to damaging rays:

  • Avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest;
  • Seek shade whenever possible;
  • Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher;
  • Wear sun-protective clothing and accessories, such as wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses; and
  • Follow the “Shadow Rule” – if your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s damaging rays are at their strongest and you are likely to burn.
  • Avoid the harmful UV rays in tanning beds

Acne 101

 Acne affects more than 17 million people in the US alone – and while there is no known cure, acne can be regulated with a daily skin care routine. I have personally developed an acne regimen that is both gentle, yet effective. The goal is to quiet the glands, not dry them out. My Advanced Acne Solution, with salicylic acid and soothing aloe, helps regulate glands so they produce the right amount of sebum for blemish-free skin. If your glands produce too much sebum, it quiets them down and if it does not produce enough, the Advanced Acne Solution revs the glands up.

The formula used in conjunction with the Daily Cleanser and Daily Normalizing Toner helps your skin work in a more regular way, gradually reducing breakouts and acne. The Clay Mask is also an important step in your skin care regimen, drawing out impurities in the skin and giving it back nutrition that it needs. For gentle exfoliation once a week, use the Honey Almond Scrub, infused with vitamin C to smooth and rejuvenate your skin. Don’t forget the Blemish Corrector & Intensive Acne Spot Treatment, contains Salicylic Acid to help treat adult and teen acne. Each and every one of these are multi-tasking products, not only fighting acne but giving your skin the nutrition it needs for a radiant, healthy glow.. Watch my step by step guide to acne deep cleaning.

In-office rejuvenating skin treatments are also effective for evening out problematic skin. I perform many different skin treatments for patients suffering from uneven skin tone and acne. One my combination process  to smooth, tighten, and even skin – microdermabrasion to exfoliate the top layer of cells and allow skin to regenerate, a laser treatment to help tighten skin, and an intense pulse light treatment to stimulate collagen production underneath the skin. Watch me perform the treatments here and learn more about these quick and effective procedures that help improve acne in just minutes.

Dr. Copeland Skin Care gets a Chic Critique

We’ve invited Cita, a beauty blogger from Chic Critique to try some of our products, and a few weeks into the trial, she reports that things are going  well. Here is her first post, which outlines her interest in acne treatments. Cita makes a good point about my Advanced Acne Solution, which is formulated to be very strong without drying. It is helpful to apply it by spraying it onto a cotton ball and then applying to your skin

If you have a beauty or skin care blog and are interested in our products, please send us a link at customerservice@drcopelandskincare.com.

Say Goodbye to Brown Spots

Brown spots, age spots, sun spots, liver spots – whatever you call them, they can make you look older than you really are. These spots can appear on people younger than 40, but are more common in our 40s and up. While bothersome and unattractive, they are generally harmless.

So what should you do if you have brown spots? First, prevention! Keep your skin healthy and protected with a good sunscreen. Second, treat the spots. Age spots can be lightened or even removed with a daily routine using exfoliating and pigment-blocking products. AHA Face Cream and AHA Body Smoothing Lotion contain alpha hydroxy to remove dead skin cells and leave skin rejuvenated.  Use the AHA products in combination with Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Formula, to lighten brown spots and even out skin tone. The Pigment Formula uses a combination of kojic acid and plant extracts of thyme and arbutin with soothing cucumber to reduce skin discolorations, and zinc and vitamin E for cell renewal. These natural ingredients block the production of melanin, which is the cause of the discoloring.

Through June 20 we are giving away 1 oz Pigment Formula with every purchase over $100.

Ten Commandments for great skin in 2010

The beginning of a new year is always a time to resolve to take better care of ourselves. Gyms are busier than at any other time and we have cleared out all of the holiday sweets and treats. I developed my Ten Commandments of Skin Care that fit right in with spirit of renewal, so it’s a good time to take a look at them and at products that can help you keep your resolutions this year.

1. Thou shalt wear sun protection. Use Daily Moisturizer with SPF-20  for protection and Sunless Tanning Bronzer  to achieve a healthy glow.
2. Thou Shalt clean your face at least once a day – try Daily Cleanser.
3. Thou shalt not subject yourself to extremes, whether excessive UV exposure, binge drinking and eating, or wildly fluctuating water temperatures.
4. Thou shalt treat your body’s skin as well as you do your face – AHA Body Smoothing Cream and Body Moisturizing Lotion will help.
5. Thou shalt learn how to exfoliate properly and do it religiously – AHA Face Cream and Microdermabrasion Formula.
6. Thou shalt eat a healthy, balanced diet – and drink a lot of water – I’ll give more tips on this in a few days.
7. Thou shalt slather on such antioxidants as vitamins E and C or green tea every day – Revitalizing Formula with C&E and Rewind Age-Defying Cream.
8. Thou shalt not be afraid of pigment-reducing cream: use them daily – Pigment Formula after exfoliation will bring results in a few weeks.
9. Thou shalt make antiaging creams and serums your new best friends and apply them at least once a day. Rewind Advanced Day Serum and Rewind Reparative Night Serum  are a dynamic duo for 24-hour coverage.
10. Thou shalt not smoke.

Threadlift – the non-surgical facelift

Here is a recent success story I’d like to share with you. A 52 year old patient came in with some sagging skin around her face that really aged her and made her feel less confident about her looks.  We decided to use Threadlift, a minimally invasive “non-surgical facelift” to address the signs of aging in the face, including droopiness of the skin of the brow, cheeks, jowls, and neck. Threads are inserted painlessly under the skin to lift and contour the tissues, providing an immediate tightening with no incisions or scars. The procedure can be performed using local anesthesia, and most patients can return to normal activities the next day. Although I see great results from Threadlift all the time, I am always impressed when I see photos like these that show such a dramatic result after only six days. My patient couldn’t be more pleased with her refreshed and revitalized face.Threadlift's amazing results
