Male Breast Reduction

We often focus on women, but in fact, many of my patients are men. A procedure I’m often asked about is male breast reduction, which is performed for a common condition called Gynecomastia. We’re not sure what causes men to have enlarged breast tissue, it often (but not always) begins in puberty. The origin can be genetic, hormonal, a medical condition like an impaired liver or testicular tumor, or the result of steroid, alcohol or marijuana use. It is a very common condition affecting 40 to 60% of men and is very easily corrected with liposuction. Using a small incision, about 3 to 4 millimeters, I can liquefy and suck out fat and glandular tissue from around the areola and from the sides and bottoms of the breasts. The incisions are covered with dressings and a compression garment must be worn for about two weeks. Insurance may cover the procedure.
