The Red Cross at work
Last night I attended a presentation for the Tiffany Circle, the women’s leadership committee of the Greater NY Red Cross. We think of the Red Cross as first responders in international disasters, like Haiti, but they are also very busy right here at home. Since the unfortunate events of Haiti on January 12th, the emergencies and disasters right here in New York have not tapered. To demonstrate the point, in the following 30 days from the January 12th earthquake in Haiti, the Red Cross throughout the Greater New York area:
- Responded to 217 emergencies and disasters such as fires and building vacates
- Provided immediate care to 1,026 people affected by these incidents
- Provided emergency housing for 465 adults and children
- Provided health and mental health services to more than 600 people
- Supported more than 1,075 residents and first responders on the scene of an emergency or disaster with food and beverages.
The Red Cross still needs to be there for all New Yorkers. Our continued efforts to raise awareness and build greater support to shore up the resources necessary to serve our local community has become increasingly acute. Please visit http://www.nyredcross.org/?nd=home
