Celebrating International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day was celebrated around the world yesterday. Hundreds of events took place to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. In many countries it is a national holiday, and each year themes are emphasized to bring attention to struggles women face worldwide. This year the  International Committee of the Red Cross is drawing attention to the hardship women displaced by natural disasters and armed conflicts endure.

Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the first International Women’s Day, and it will be an occasion to reflect on the progress toward equality women have made, and also the need to support women who live under the threat of sexual violence, discrimination and intimidation.  It’s a day for us all to congratulate each other on all the progress the planet has made, and will make, for women everywhere.
