Fight back against acne, at any age

Acne isn’t just an issue for teens and many adult women complain to me about breakouts in their thirties and forties. Many of these women weren’t bothered by acne as teens and don’t have any idea how to treat redness, blotchiness and pimples associated with breakouts. Here is a video explaining my anti-acne regimen, which starts with a basic skin care routine and adds Advanced Acne Solution and Blemish Corrector to treat acne spots. Consistent care will take care of even the most stubborn adult acne, and can be incorporated into your daily skin care routine.

Today is the annual American Heart Association Go Red for Women Luncheon at the Hilton Hotel New York, hosted by Star Jones . Dr. Copeland, a committee member for Go Red for Women, has made a donation to the silent auction featuring a gift basket  including Dr. Copeland Skin Care products and a $2,200 gift certificate for Zerona body-slimming treatments. The annual luncheon has a tremendous turn out to spread the important message that heart disease is the #1 killer of women, but doesn’t have to be if we can improve awareness.

The Right Way to Exfoliate

Exfoliating your skin is an important part of my recommended skin care regimen. It is critical to slough off dead skin cells and stimulate cells to rejuvenate skin. There are many products that claim to exfoliate – from brushes to gritty cleansers.  The best way to exfoliate is to use products that can be applied with your fingertips. AHA Face Cream and AHA Body Smoothing Lotion speed cell turnover and can be used daily without scrubbing. Microdermabrasion Formula gently scrubs skin and can be used once or twice a week to smooth skin and stimulate rejuvenation. Remember, the best products are the ones that you can use with your hands and then rinse down the drain when you’re finished.

And, you can save 20% on exfoliating products right now!

New Study Shows Tanning Beds Can Be Addictive

A new study published online in Addiction Biology shows that tanning bed use may be addictive. The research shows that brain activity of people who use tanning beds are similar to what has been observed in people addicted to drugs or alcohol. Using tanning beds has rewarding effects in the brain, so people can feel tempted to continue tanning, despite the harmful effects of UV rays.

The number one cause of premature aging, wrinkles, and discoloration is caused by sun exposure – and damaging UVA/UVB rays can also cause skin cancer. I tell my patients that the only safe way to tan is to apply bronzer, and to religiously apply sun block every day. Even the most ardent sun-worshippers among my patients are learning to love bronzer, and if applied after a good exfoliation using AHA Body Smoothing Lotion, it goes on smoothly and evenly for great results. If you’re looking for the bronzed look in the winter, try my Sunless Tanning Bronzer with SPF-15, it will give you a beautiful, natural tan year around and contains antioxidants to leave your skin smooth and supple. If you’re going to get your vitamin D dose out in the sun make sure you wear proper protection. My Daily Moisturizer with SPF-30 protects from both UV-A and UV-B rays and contains clear zinc oxide, lipoic acid, vitamins A & E that hydrate and moisturize without clogging pores.

“Acne-fighting” Apps Targeted for Fraudulent Claims

The Federal Trade Commission has recently ordered two companies to stop marketing their smartphone apps as “acne cures”, reports the Los Angeles Times. The apps, AcneApp and Acne Pwner, both claim to treat blemishes by emitting colored lights on the affected areas of the skin. The FTC is targeting both smartphone apps for making fraudulent health claims, but according to news reports, nearly 15,000 people have already downloaded the apps.

While these apps unrealistically claim to reduce blemishes, the only real way to treat acne is with a daily skin care routine. I have personally developed an acne regimen that is both gentle, yet highly effective. My Advanced Acne Solution, with salicylic acid and soothing aloe, helps regulate glands so they produce the right amount of sebum for blemish-free skin. The formula used in conjunction with the Daily Cleanser and Daily Normalizing Toner helps your skin work in a more regular way, gradually reducing breakouts and acne. The Clay Mask is also an important step in your skin care regimen, drawing out impurities in the skin and giving it back nutrition that it needs. For gentle exfoliation once a week, use the Honey Almond Scrub, infused with vitamin C to smooth and rejuvenate your skin. And don’t forget the Blemish Corrector & Intensive Acne Spot Treatment, that contains Salicylic Acid to help treat adult and teen acne. Each and every one of these are multi-tasking products, not only fighting acne but giving your skin the nutrition it needs for a radiant, healthy glow.

Plastic Surgery Patients Often Get Bad Rap

There may be a stigma attached to invasive anti-aging procedures – a study published in the Journal of Gerontology shows that many people consider these treatments as a sign of vanity. The research further shows that young adults are more negative than older adults about undergoing anti-aging procedures. Although today there is an emphasis on looking younger in society, there are possible negative social consequences to fighting the signs of aging by undergoing cosmetic surgery.

I believe that choosing a cosmetic procedure to fix a long-term problem that has negatively affected how you feel about yourself is practical, pro-active, and self-affirming. Appearance, in fact, has an enormous impact on emotional well-being and quality of life, for people of all ages and for men as well as women. There’s nothing “cosmetic” about that, or vain, or neurotic. You can look better than you’ve ever imagined, and still stay true to yourself. Making subtle, yet important changes to your appearance can let you take control of how you look and feel. Plastic surgery can be an extremely valuable investment in your future health, happiness, and well-being. As I discuss in my book, Change Your Looks, Change Your Life, Quick Fixes and Cosmetic Surgery Solutions for Looking Younger, Feeling Healthier, and Living Better, cosmetic enhancements should improve on what nature has already given you. My goal is to make each patient look his or her very best, and achieve “natural beauty”. This is the art and science of what I do each and every day.  When the procedure is performed well, friends and colleagues should not even suspect that you’ve had work done. They’ll just think you look great.

Men’s Grooming On The Rise In 2012

New research done by the NPD Group shows that men are warming up to skin care products. The men’s facial skincare market grew 11% in sales in the past year – more and more marketers are launching cleansers, moisturizers, lip and eye products, and anti-aging treatments for men. And women are more open about men using skin care products, so they encourage their partners to buy their own moisturizers, and stop using theirs. Today, men as well as women want to look polished and well groomed. However, unlike women, men are minimalistic in their approach to skin care and they don’t usually like to fuss.

Men tend to have thicker skin with more subcutaneous tissue so they lose elasticity more slowly.  They have firmer collagen so they also wrinkle more slowly.  Shaving often contributes to skin irritation and dryness. To help dry skin and protect against harmful rays the Daily Moisturizer with SPF-30 is the ultimate, antioxidant- rich daily moisturizer with sun protection and perfect for sensitive skin. For extra UVA and UVB protection, the SPF-40 Lotion Mist Sun Block is ideal for men who want gentle yet effective SPF-40 protection. The Men’s Aftershave is an invigorating and soothing conditioning treatment that comforts and protects skin after shaving. Finally, the weekend should include the Microdermabrasion Formula in the shower to get rid of the scruffy feeling, and the AHA’s (alpha hydroxyl acids), vitamins C & E, powerful antioxidants help renew the skin.

Increase in cosmetic procedures for men noted in The Economist

The Economist reports on men and cosmetic procedures this week, noting that professional pressures often lead men to consider Botox, fillers and other treatments to look younger. After thousands of hours of conversations with hundreds of males, I can testify that men are no less concerned about their looks than women are. I have even devoted a whole chapter to men’s body image and procedures in my book, Change Your Looks, Change your Life, Quick Fixes and Cosmetic Surgery Solutions for Looking Younger, Feeling Healthier, and Living Better.

Don’t forget your feet!

Even though it’s winter and feet are covered up, stuck in boots and heavy socks, it’s important to keep skin fresh. To keep your feet fit and feeling great, give them the moisturizing and TLC they need. For rough skin on heels, use Microdermabrasion Formula or Honey Almond Scrub once or twice per week. A daily combination of AHA Skin Smoothing Lotion and Body Moisturizing Lotion is a good way to exfoliate and keep skin moist. Good care now can keep  your feet ready to be on display in spring – it’s coming!
