Myth: Lip Gloss and Lipstick Protect You from UV Damage

Fact: Most lipsticks and glosses don’t contain any SPF, and may actually worsen UV exposure. Like once-popular sunbathing oils, lip gloss or lipstick “increases your susceptibility [to damage] because it attracts the heat — you’re frying your lips,” says plastic surgeon Michelle Copeland, M.D. If you must have color when you’re on the beach, apply a lip balm with SPF before you put on a lipstick or gloss, she says. Signs of skin cancer include persistent, scaly, crusty areas above or on the lip, or a red patch above the lip or near the lip line. “If it’s been there a month, have a doctor take a look at it,” Copeland says. “These lesions, if you get them early, don’t spread.”

Are More Men Getting Cosmetic Procedures?

More men are having cosmetic procedures than ever before. A Wall Street Journal article this week talked about this recent uptrend  that the American Society of Plastic Surgeons noted in their  statistics. What are the  most common procedures men are seeking? Facial rejuvenation through facelifts and non-invasive procedures such as was Thermage, liposuction, and male breast reductions are topping the list. In fact, over the past 10 years there has been an increase in men seeking plastic surgery, which is why in Change Your Looks, Change your Life, Quick Fixes and Cosmetic Surgery Solutions for Looking Younger, Feeling Healthier, and Living Better I devote an entire chapter to men. What’s with the new interest? As the divorce rate continues to increase there are more single men needing to be competitive on the dating scene as well as at the job. A man who eliminates a pouch that months of pumping iron can’t shake, or improves a weak chin that’s been hiding under a beard, feels instantly recharged. His once-flagging confidence among co-workers, not to mention among peers and women who aren’t colleagues, is replaced by self-esteem.  And frown lines can make a person look angry which isn’t good for a man or a woman. After thousands of hours of conversations with hundreds of males, I can testify that men  are no less concerned about their looks than women are.

Sun Sensitivity- Sunburn Boosters

I’ve been focusing on sunscreen because it’s Skin Cancer Awareness month. Did you  know that some very common medicines and skin care products can increase your sensitivity to the sun and heighten your reaction to the sun. Prescription drugs, such as antibiotics or Accutane, over-the-counter pain relievers, herbal remedies such as St. John’s wort,  perfumes, exfoliating skin care products, and even some sunscreens can increase sensitivity to the sun. Pain aside, a bad sunburn or excessive sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer. My SPF-40 Lotion Mist Sunblock is formulated to block UVA/UVB rays and is PABA-free with soothing aloe to reduce inflammation and is safe for children to use. Like all of our products, it is allergy-tested and fragrance free.   Your lips are just as important. The Lip Protector with SPF-15 provides a powerful blend of antioxidants to prevent chapping, cracking and dryness- all while erasing fine lines around the lip, plus it protects from the harsh ultraviolet rays.

Summer Reading

Did you know that Dr Copeland’s book  Change Your Looks, Change Your Life can now be purchased for the Kindle?  If you are thinking about cosmetic surgery, this book remains an essential guide to the options available from minor to major. This is what Dan’s Paper of the happening Hamptons  said about this must read book:  “Who said beauty is only skin-deep? Certainly not anyone who has broken off a promising relationship, or suffered a plunge in self confidence, thanks to crow’s feet, saddlebags, or a scowl embedded in your forehead. Appearance, in fact, has an enormous impact on emotional well being and quality of life, for people of all ages and for men as well as women.

An accomplished and renowned plastic surgeon and Bridgehampton resident, Dr. Michelle Copeland, shows how easy it can be for just about anyone to improve his or her appearance—and transform their entire outlook. It’s all in her informative uplifting book, Change Your Looks, Change Your Life. The book, packed with quick fixes and cosmetic surgery solutions, is worth every penny and most enjoyable reading, shows you how Dr. Copeland is a firm believer in cosmetic wellness—making physical changes for the emotional and health benefits. Dr. Copeland presents a comprehensive, detailed and realistic guide to the many cosmetic options available, with an emphasis on the least invasive and most effective, safe and affordable procedures.”

Hair Free, Care Free Summer!

I’ve been talking a lot about ways to get your body ready for the summer.    Body hair can be a problem especially during the summer.   Waxing and shaving is not only a bother, especially when you want to wear a bathing suit and shorts on the hot summer days but can result in skin discoloration and ingrown hairs.  Did you know that  laser hair removal  not only offers permanent freedom from unwanted body hair, but also can help eliminate ingrown hairs. Popular with both men and women, it is best suited for darker hair but new advances even allow reduction in gray or blonde hair. Commonly performed on the upper lip, chin, chest, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line, and legs,  I use a variety of FDA approved lasers, such as the Light Sheer® laser, for permanent hair removal for all skin types. Feel comfortable in your clothes this summer without the fuss of shaving and waxing!

What Happened to Bristol Palin’s Face?

WHAT HAPPENED TO BRISTOL PALIN’S FACE?   There has been speculation that she had cosmetic surgery, including a chin implant, to improve her facial contour, but Bristol says she did not have cosmetic surgery, but underwent “corrective jaw surgery”.  Indeed,  Bristol has had problems with a small lower jaw and malocclusion or misalignment of her teeth and jaws since childhood.  This type of problem cannot be corrected with braces alone, but requires surgery of the jaws (Orthognathic surgery).

A team of doctors including and orthodontist to get the teeth aligned and maxillofacial surgeons who make cuts in the jaw bone and move it forward are involved in this type of corrective jaw surgery.  The position of the teeth and jaws affects how we breath and how we chew and of course, how we look so having this surgery is a win win all around.  Congratulations to Bristol.

Step Aside Rain, Here Come’s Bathing Suit Weather

On a dreary day like today, it’s hard to think about the summer weather and sporting your favorite bathing suit.  ZERONA® is an FDA cleared alternative to liposuction, which reduces inches with no pain, no surgery and no downtime. It’s the perfect way to lose stubborn fat from: neck, love handles, arms, hips, back/bra‐line, thighs, tummy/waistline and knees in this fast pace world we live in. Patients are losing between 3.6 to 5.5 inches and many are seeing even greater results when combined with a sensible diet and exercise program.  After just six 40 minute treatments you will see inches melt away. Many patients are doing back to back treatments and losing even more inches and up to 14 inches of total loss!

Best of all there is no recovery or downtime so you can resume all your normal activities immediately after each treatment.  Now is the time better than ever to get that jumpstart for the fast approaching bathing suit weather.

Are Your Sun Care Needs Covered?

Because May is Skin Cancer Awareness month, it’s a good time to make sure your sun care needs are covered.   Did you know that some common medicines and skin care products can increase your sensitivity to the sun  so you burn faster. Prescription drugs, such as antibiotics or Accutane, over-the-counter pain relievers, herbal remedies such as St. John’s Wort,  perfumes, exfoliating skin care products, and even some sunscreens can do this. Pain aside, a bad sunburn or excessive sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer. My SPF-40 Lotion Mist Sunblock is formulated  with clear zinc oxide to block UVA/UVB rays. It’s  PABA-free  and contains soothing aloe to reduce inflammation.. Like all of our products, it is allergy-tested and fragrance free.
