September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

zerocancerAccording to the  CDC, the most common diagnosed cancer in men is prostate cancer and second to lung cancer in number of cancer deaths. To lower your risk, changes in your lifestyle, including diet and exercise can be beneficial for the prevention of prostate cancer. Common risk factors are age, with 1 in 6 men diagnosed at some point in his lifetime, family history, race, with the incidence of prostate cancer higher among African American men, and diet and obesity.

Foods such as soy products, selenium found in mushrooms and other plant foods, and pomegranate may reduce PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels. A diet full of red meat, sweets, and desserts can double your risk of prostate cancer, as well initiate problems with obesity. Annual PSA screenings should begin at age 45, which is the best option for early detection. Dr. Michelle Copeland supports the promotion of men’s health. It is not just about your physical looks, but maintaining a balance of practicing good health with diet and exercise. Find out more on prostate cancer information from ZeroCancer!

Unsightly scars don’t have to be a badge of courage

Whether a scar results from an accident or a previous surgery, for many people it is not a badge of courage but an unsightly or even deforming mark. Today we have ways to improve a scar’s appearance.  Some techniques are most effective when a scar is still fresh, such as topical creams including  AHA Body Smoothing Cream and Pigment Formula which help smooth texture and reduce discoloration associated with scars.  Also, gentle massage directly  on and around a scar in a small circular motion, can make the new collagen softer and suppler, and help sensation return to the area. For scars that have fully formed, laser and microdermabrasion treatments can be effective, and a good plastic surgeon can advise you of the cost and number of treatments required for an optimal result.

Of course, prevention is always the best way to minimize surgical scars.  Refined techniques in plastic surgery allow smaller scars to be made and placed in positions that often make them  invisible , so choose your surgeon wisely and ask how scars can be minimized.   It’s the art and science of what  I do as a plastic surgeon.

Pigment formulas – read the ingredients

Recently, Galderma Laboratories, L.P. received a warning letter from the FDA’s Division of Marketing, Advertising and Communications on their product Tri-Luma Cream for the promotion of unapproved uses. Galderma Laboratories, L.P. falsely classified Tri-Luma for use in the treatment of dark spots and any type of melasma and other hyperpigmentation conditions.

Dr. Michelle Copeland Skincare’s Pigment Formula is a bold brightening lotion that  helps reduce the appearance of  brown spots, sun spots and other discolorations. Also effective at reducing the appearance of scars including acne scars and great for under eye dark circles it’s a light, oil-free and hydroquinone-free solution. The Pigment Formula uses a combination of  natural ingredients like thyme, arbutin and kojic acid  along with  soothing cucumber  and antioxidants, zinc and vitamin E for cell renewal to effectively target  the blockage of melanin production which is the cause of the brown pigment.   Check out before/after photos.

Banish Back Acne

back1When our sebaceous glands produce too much oil, breakouts will occur more frequently and unfortunately, “bacne” is harder to prevent and treat than facial blemishes. Daily activities like working out, driving and sitting can irritate bacne – but you can fight back.

Skin on the back is much thicker than the skin on other areas of the body, which means it’s typically more resistant to treatment. And many people make the mistake that this skin condition will go away on its own, but bacne can be difficult to treat.

Treatment for bacne begins in the shower – wash regularly with an exfoliating product such as my Honey Almond Scrub, which gently removes dead cells leaving the skin clean and refreshed. This heavenly scrub is ideal for acne-prone skin. To fight existing back blemishes, it is also vital to use a powerful acne formula, like my Advanced Acne Solution which removes excess oils and balances sebum production in your skin. The solution doesn’t cause drying or flaking, and contains soothing aloe to reduce inflammation due to bacne.

Having healthy, beautiful skin means looking after all of it from hairline to heel. Bacne can be embarrassing and uncomfortable, but very treatable with the right skin-care regimen. Click here to see my complete skin care line – and don’t hesitate to schedule a skin care consultation to learn how to get beautiful, radiant skin. Acne Treatment 101

Acne affects more than 17 million people in the US alone – and while there is no known cure, acne can be regulated with a daily skin care routine. I have personally developed an acne regimen that is both gentle, yet effective. The goal is to quiet the glands, not dry them out. My Advanced Acne Solution, with salicylic acid and soothing aloe, helps regulate glands so they produce the right amount of sebum for blemish-free skin. If your glands produce too much sebum, it quiets them down and if it does not produce enough, the Advanced Acne Solution revs the glands up.

The formula used in conjunction with the Daily Cleanser and Daily Normalizing Toner helps your skin work in a more regular way, gradually reducing breakouts and acne. The Clay Mask is also an important step in your skin care regimen, drawing out impurities in the skin and giving it back nutrition that it needs. For gentle exfoliation once a week, use the Honey Almond Scrub, infused with vitamin C to smooth and rejuvenate your skin. Each and every one of these are multi-tasking products, not only fighting acne but giving your skin the nutrition it needs for a radiant, healthy glow. Watch my step by step guide to acne deep cleaning.

In-office rejuvenating skin treatments are also effective for evening out problematic skin. I perform many different skin treatments for patients suffering from uneven skin tone and acne. One my combination process  to smooth, tighten, and even skin – microdermabrasion to exfoliate the top layer of cells and allow skin to regenerate, a laser treatment to help tighten skin, and an intense pulse light treatment to stimulate collagen production underneath the skin. Watch me perform the treatments here and learn more about these quick and effective procedures that help improve acne in just minutes.drcvidep

Dr. Copeland Skin Care gets a Chic Critique

We’ve invited Cita, a beauty blogger from Chic Critique to try some of our products, and a few weeks into the trial, she reports that things are going  well. Here is her first post, which outlines her interest in acne treatments. Cita makes a good point about my Advanced Acne Solution, which is formulated to be very strong without drying. It is helpful to apply it by spraying it onto a cotton ball and then applying to your skin

Deal With Life’s Sweaty Situations

untitledWe all sweat – but when heavy sweating causes embarrassment and changes the way you live your life, it may be time for action. Fortunately, this is a situation we can address with an office visit.

Some people produce much more perspiration than they need to keep their body cool. This condition is known as hyperhidrosis, which affects more than a million people in the US alone. My patients often suffer from difficulty in social situations and tell me that excessive sweating significantly interferes with their daily activities. But a treatment made famous for fighting wrinkles can also provide lasting relief for this uncomfortable condition – BOTOX®.  BOTOX® injections block the chemical signals sent from the nerves that control sweating, an essentially safe solution for excessive perspiration. The substance relaxes muscles associated with the sweat glands – a positive effect on a patient’s quality of life. Schedule a BOTOX® consultation with me, so I can help you be confident, sweat-free, and most importantly stress-free.

And find out what makes you sweat, at WebMD’s personal sweat evaluator.
